The MPEG-H TV Audio System, developed primarily by Fraunhofer IIS, passed a major milestone in Europe when it was successfully transmitted via satellite and DVB-T2 in the live Ultra HD TV broadcast channel of a major international tennis tournament taking place in Paris, France.

EBU and Fraunhofer IIS Conducted Live MPEG-H Audio Production Trial at Eurovision Song Contest 2018

The European Broadcasting Union EBU and Fraunhofer IIS have successfully conducted the first trial for live production of immersive and interactive sound using the MPEG-H TV Audio System at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in Lisbon, Portugal. For the trial, the Fraunhofer sound engineers installed a height dimension to the impressive microphone setup in the Altice Arena, enabling them to produce an immersive and personalized audio mix live. Broadcasters and sound experts present at the venue could experience the enveloping and interactive MPEG-H sound.

A new sound dimension for renowned documentary series

In a worldwide industry first for a TV broadcast station, the German public broadcaster ZDF will use MPEG-H Audio and Cingo for a TV production. The upcoming episode “Wolfskinder” from the highly successful documentary series “Terra X” will be produced in 3D sound together with 4K and 360 degree video for virtual reality applications. Fraunhofer IIS will be responsible for providing next generation audio technologies Cingo and MPEG-H, in addition to supporting 3D sound recordings on set.
