VBox Android TV Gateway now supports MPEG-H Audio

Users of the VBox Android TV Gateway can now benefit from MPEG-H Audio capabilities for ATSC 3.0, ISDB-T, and DVB.

At CES 2022, Vbox Communications unveils its new Android TV Gateway set-top-box with MPEG-H Audio decoding capabilities for broadcast signals received over ATSC 3.0, ISDB-T, and DVB systems.

MPEG-H Audio is the Next Generation Audio (NGA) standard for broadcast and streaming. It is particularly interesting for modern content providers because, in addition to immersive sound, it provides advanced personalization and accessibility options, which no other audio system can currently deliver. The system enables the audience to interact with the content and to adapt the audio experience to their preferences. The option to personalize the balance of dialogue and background sounds, choose between different languages, and position the audio description at different locations in the room, makes for a highly individualized experience for everyone while at the same time ensuring an unmatched degree of accessibility for people with visual or hearing impairments.

Supporting broadcast services around the world

These advanced capabilities are the main reasons for the inclusion of MPEG-H Audio in the Brazilian TV 2.5 standard, which is part of a major technological upgrade of the country’s digital TV infrastructure. Grupo Rede Amazônica, the largest communication group in northern Brazil, just implemented regular 24/7 broadcast services in MPEG-H Audio on one of their terrestrial broadcast channels using ISDB-Tb TV 2.5.

Already selected for ATSC 3.0 broadcasting in South Korea, the MPEG-H Audio system is used on-the-air for UHD broadcast since 2017.

In addition to that, the UHD Spain association has announced its plans to test NGA systems, including MPEG-H Audio, in 2022. VBox Android TV Gateway users can potentially participate in public trials as the box is equipped to receive the MPEG-H Audio signal over DVB-T2 antenna and can provide personalization options to the Spanish audience.

VBox Communications, a provider of the product family VBox Gateway, live broadcast TV streaming and recording technologies, will show the newest capabilities of its ATSC 3.0 Android TV Gateway at CES 2022 in the Venetian Expo/Eureka Park section of Tech West – Booth 61708. Fraunhofer IIS will showcase MPEG-H Audio and further audio innovations at booth 17093 in the Central Hall.
