Meet us in Singapore from May 20 – 22 and explore our ultra‑efficient AI‑based codecs for audio and media. We will also showcase xHE AAC for audio streaming and JPEG XS for video transmission over IP. Our solutions are designed to perform where bandwidth is limited and latency matters most.
Technologies on Display
Reliable Voice Communication Over Non‑Terrestrial Networks with Fraunhofer NESC
NESC is an ultra‑efficient AI‑based voice codec designed for direct‑to‑device satellite communication. Operating at bitrates of 1 kbit/s or less, it enables robust and reliable voice transmission over GEO, MEO, and LEO satellite constellations.
NESC makes NTN voice services viable at scale – from emergency communications and audio messaging to satellite voice services with audio quality comparable to terrestrial calls. With its market‑leading coding efficiency, the technology is ready for commercial deployment by satellite and mobile network operators, helping to extend reliable voice coverage to areas where terrestrial networks cannot reach.
Neural network-based Codec for Video Communication NCVC
At Satellite Asia, we are presenting a technology preview of our AI-based video codec. The NCVC codec is designed to enable smooth video conferencing experiences at ultra-low bitrate and low latency over narrow-band transmission links. With these characteristics it is an ideal solution for video conferencing over Low Earth Orbit satellites allowing direct-to-device transmission (D2D) between smartphones. NCVC enables the transfer of video and audio data with a bitrate of 3‑20 kbit/s and at 25 fps.
Using AI‑enhanced methods, the codec separates the background from the foreground of images and compresses them independently. Especially for video conferences, the image data of faces and shoulders are encoded at a higher quality than the surrounding areas to guarantee a smoot live transmission.
Using intra‑frame coding (i‑frame) and key points, NVCV can predict the changes between two i‑frames without using p‑ and b‑frames. This enables ultra‑fast and ultra‑efficient video coding at under 10 kbit/s, including audio.
JPEG XS Brings Visually Lossless Compression for IP Workflows
JPEG XS is the new ISO/IEC codec for all IP workflows in studio environments, live productions, local video networks and for VR/AR applications. JPEG XS enables the transfer of high-resolution video data over standard Ethernet or other wired connections. The codec is designed to operate with low latency and limited computing resources. JPEG XS provides a compression ratio from 6:1 to 16:1 (typically 10:1) and predictive and precise rate control, and RTP streaming support.
Fraunhofer IIS provides a JPEG XS SDK with an ‘Application Support Package’ that enables user to easily implement JPEG XS in typical workflows like camera to stream or stream to display using sample codes for encoding and decoding.
Efficient Audio Streaming with xHE‑AAC
xHE‑AAC is the latest generation of the trusted AAC codec family. Used by leading OTT platforms such as Audible, Netflix, and in Instagram Reels, it delivers a noticeably better listening experience — from ultra‑low to high bitrates. Mandatory loudness control, seamless DASH/HLS adaptive streaming, and superior speech quality ensure stable playback even under fluctuating network conditions. The technology is natively supported in Android, iOS, Fire OS, Vega OS, and Windows 11 devices, making high‑quality audio available across billions worldwide.
