Dash in DVB: Non-stop TV

At this year’s IBC in Amsterdam, IP delivery played a critical role at the DVB booth. These days it is possible to deliver DVB services over IP systems and get IP packets over DVB systems. Compared to ordinary broadcasting via cable, satellite or terrestrial, the packet based delivery over the Internet is forced to handle unexpected network constraints that can lead to packet loss. This can cause anger and frustration among viewers, for example if an important goal is missed during a sports broadcast. To guarantee continuous service without sudden interruption, DVB relies on DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) and HE-AAC, the preeminent audio codec to support a wide spectrum of bitrates.

Fraunhofer Cingo: Fabulous sound on mobile devices

The Fraunhofer technology Cingo enables fascinating sound on mobile devices and allows a full immersion into movies, games or virtual worlds. At IBC 2015, Fraunhofer and castLabs demonstrate a new VR streaming app that delivers MPEG-H encoded 3D audio content including audio objects to the Samsung GearVR. In this way users can experience impressive and immersive sound from all directions.

Erlangen/Munich, October 13, 2015: The Eduard Rhein Foundation has selected Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. Karlheinz Brandenburg, Dr.-Ing. Bernhard Grill and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Herre to receive the 2015 Technology Award of the Eduard Rhein Foundation for their significant contributions to the development and implementation of mp3. The audio coding standard forever changed the world of music with its ability to allow music lovers to save their entire music library on a device as small as a matchbox for the very first time.

Perfect sound for digital radio and streaming thanks to xHE-AAC

xHE-AAC, the latest upgrade to the MPEG AAC codec family, has mainly been developed by Fraunhofer IIS and combines the advantages of existing audio and speech codecs within one technology. It provides consistent high quality audio for all signal types, such as talk radio or music programs at low bit rates. Moreover, at this year’s IBC Fraunhofer IIS presented with “StreamS Live” from Modulation Index, LLC the first professional streaming encoder supporting xHE-AAC.

The sound of the future: Fraunhofer IIS at IBC 2015

From September 11 to 15, 2015 the broadcasting industry met at IBC in Amsterdam. More than 33.000 visitors and 21.000 exhibitors informed themselves about the latest and future trends and new technical solutions in all relevant areas of film, television and radio production. Fraunhofer IIS was also on-site to present immersive sound for the future of television audio, impressive sound for mobile devices or new digital radio applications.
