Shaping the Broadcasting Industry Together at IBC 2025

From September 12 to 15, Amsterdam becomes the hotspot for experts from the media and entertainment industry, attending the yearly International Broadcasting Convention (IBC). Fraunhofer IIS will also be present and showcase our latest audio innovations that are shaping the future of audio at booth 8.B08 in Hall 8.

Next-generation Broadcast and Streaming with cutting-edge technologies

xHE-AAC is the latest generation of the renowned AAC codec line and already used in Audible, Netflix, Facebook Stories, and Instagram Reels. The technology is natively supported in iOS, Android, Fire OS, and Windows 11. It provides DASH/HLS streaming at 12 to more than 320+ kbit/s, mandatory loudness and dynamic range control, and improved speech quality as well as stereo imaging. As part of the latest RCS 3.1 standard by GSMA, xHE-AAC enables the highly efficient encoding of audio content that is shared via the native messaging applications on mobile networks. This enhances the quality of both speech and non-speech applications significantly. Whether users are sending voice notes, ambient sound clips, or business messaging content such as advertisements, they can now expect clearer, more natural playback.

MPEG-H Audio is a comprehensive Next Generation Audio (NGA) system with advanced personalization and accessibility options. It is the mandatory audio codec of Brazil’s new DTV+ broadcast standard and was selected as audio codec for the upcoming advanced ISDB broadcast system in Japan. MPEG-H Audio enables the creation and delivery of personalized immersive audio, which ensures accessibility through dialogue enhancement and audio description options. Sports broadcasts, for instance, can become customized experiences as MPEG-H Audio makes possible the selection of a language or favorite commentator, and choosing preferred sound settings like crowd sound, classic mix, and coaching zone. The playback is automatically optimized for the individual scenario and there are tools and solutions for the entire broadcast chain. Experience a groundbreaking joint demonstration by Fraunhofer IIS and its partners BBright, Jünger Audio, Linear Acoustic, and Ateme at IBC 2025. Together, they showcase the first complete IP production and broadcasting chain utilizing MPEG-H Audio which transports audio and S-ADM metadata over SMPTE ST 2110-30 and ST 2110-41.

MPEG-H Dialog+ is a groundbreaking solution that enhances dialogue clarity by intelligently distinguishing between speech and singing. This innovative technology recognizes singing voices and excludes them from dialogue enhancement, precisely separating the dialogue and transforming it into an audio object. It is effective for both new productions and legacy material, supporting audio configurations from 2.0 to 5.1 channels, including panned dialogue. With AI-based dialogue separation and remixing capabilities, MPEG-H Dialog+ is set to redefine accessibility in audio content.

Upgrading public announcements and digital broadcasting

Explore our newly released DAB+/DRM ContentServer R8 head-end technology that offers comprehensive support for the latest ASA/EWS alarm signaling standard with EWFplus. This solution includes advanced receiver testing and development, automatic audio loudness normalization, and secure reliable transport (SRT) for audio input and output. The updated Journaline encoder provides even better content delivery for consumer and automotive devices, ensuring that digital radio remains a robust platform for broadcasting.

Allinga, our Text-to-Speech Technology, plays an increasingly important role in AI-based production processes in digital broadcasting. It converts written text into lifelike speech, offering an efficient solution for on-demand voice production. It automates security alerts, weather reports, and traffic updates, ensuring continuous, up-to-date reporting of information without human speakers. Its multilingual feature supports many languages besides German. With low computing requirements, Allinga TTS can be run on local servers (on-premise), ensuring reliability even without internet connection. As an integral part of the Emergency Warning Functionality (EWFplus), the technology helps inform the public in case of disasters – in real time and even without a host in the broadcasting studio.

Award winning video technologies

With JPEG XS Fraunhofer IIS also raises the benchmark in video coding. The Award-winning codec levels up your high-speed, high-performance video data transmission for professional production and collaborative postproduction based on IP with low latency, achieving almost real-time performance. The JPEG XS SDK is available for MPEG-TS, ST2110, and IMPX. It provides development kits for CPUs (Intel, AMD, ARM), for GPUs (Nvidia) and containerized solutions including Holoscan for Media support.

The easyDCP software suite for the ewasy creation of digital cinema packages now also enables multi-language subtitling that lets you easily connect to your favorite transcription and translation services for your DCPs. SRT subtitle import and export extends your flexibility and providing a browser-based app for post-editing and quality control maximizes easy access to your workflow. IAB Immersive Audio Bitstream support and HDR encoding optimization help optimize your performance. Everything is integrated into your familiar “easyDCP world”.
