Samsung Elevates Next-Generation Audio Experience by Joining MPEG-H Trademark Program for Global Broadcast and Streaming

Samsung, the world’s leading TV manufacturer, has become part of the MPEG-H Trademark Program to enable consistent, interoperable MPEG-H Audio across its TV lineup, supporting global deployments in broadcast applications and the growing demand for personalized live streaming experiences.

Samsung Joins the MPEG-H Trademark Program

Samsung has recently joined the MPEG-H Trademark Program from Fraunhofer IIS, a certification framework designed to ensure correct and interoperable implementations of the MPEG-H Audio standard across devices and services. As the global leader in TV technology, Samsung sets the standard for premium home entertainment. Participation in this program is a testament to the company’s proactive approach in driving consistent, top-tier audio feature support across its expansive TV portfolio, actively shaping both the broadcast and OTT ecosystems for the future.

For device manufacturers, certification provides a structured validation process to improve compatibility across the device ecosystem.

Global Scaling of MPEG-H Across Broadcast Ecosystems

MPEG-H Audio has already established itself as the audio standard of choice in two of the world’s most prominent next-generation broadcast deployments. In South Korea, MPEG-H has been at the heart of UHD TV services since their launch in 2017, delivering immersive and personalized audio to millions of households. In Brazil, MPEG-H is the designated audio standard for the DTV+ system – the country’s unified next-generation terrestrial broadcast and streaming platform – which officially launched in June, 2026. Both deployments are built on the ATSC 3.0 broadcast standard, making MPEG-H certification a critical requirement for TVs operating in these markets.

Samsung’s participation in the MPEG-H Trademark Program is essential toward meeting the technical requirements of the DTV+ specification, ensuring that Samsung TVs seamlessly deliver MPEG-H features in alignment with the Brazilian standard.

Together, these initiatives demonstrate the transition toward next-generation audio in broadcast systems and point to a broader objective: enabling consistent MPEG-H support across devices for both broadcast and streaming use cases worldwide.

“At Samsung, our ultimate goal is to provide viewers with the most immersive and personalized home entertainment experience possible. By joining the MPEG-H Trademark Program, we are not only ensuring seamless and globally standardized next-generation audio across our TV portfolio, but also empowering our users to enjoy sports and live streams exactly the way they want – with unparalleled clarity and control,” said Sunmin Kim, Vice President, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics.

Beyond Broadcast: MPEG-H and the Live Streaming Revolution

MPEG-H Audio is rapidly becoming a cornerstone of next-generation live sports streaming, where its unique personalization capabilities are redefining the viewer experience. Audiences can adjust dialogue levels, switch between commentary languages, select a stadium option without a commentator, or customize the audio mix in real time – all within parameters defined by the content provider.

As streaming platforms compete to deliver differentiated, premium experiences, MPEG-H’s interactivity features offer a powerful tool for audience engagement. Samsung TVs, as one of the world’s leading smart TV platforms, play a central role in bringing these capabilities to viewers at scale.

With native support for Immersive sound, advanced accessibility options, and seamless ad-insertion functionalities, MPEG-H Audio is a complete next generation audio solution for today’s streaming ecosystems.

Ensuring Interoperability and Feature Availability

The MPEG-H Trademark Program validates key implementation aspects to ensure consistent functionality:

  • User interactivity: Availability of personalization features (e.g., dialogue control, object selection) via the TV’s native user interface
  • Application integration: UI Manager access for streaming apps to enable MPEG-H features within OTT services
  • Passthrough support: Delivery of MPEG-H Audio bitstream to external soundbars and AVRs for a truly immersive experience

These elements help align device behavior across ecosystems and reduce integration complexity.

“With Samsung’s participation in the MPEG-H Trademark Program, broadcasters, streaming providers, and content creators can be confident that their next-generation audio will be delivered and experienced exactly as intended on Samsung devices – whether in a living room in Seoul, São Paulo, or anywhere else in the world,” said Martin Dietz, Head of the Audio and Media Technologies Division at Fraunhofer IIS.
