T-Mobile USA launches EVS service

EVS is the new 3GPP audio codec for Voice over LTE services with superior speech and audio quality co-developed by Fraunhofer IIS and is the latest upgrade to T-Mobile USA’s network. It offers substantial improvements in the quality of voice calls compared to regular or HD Voice calls. T-Mobile USA is the first operator in the world to announce the introduction of EVS in its VoLTE network. With the launch of the first EVS enabled smartphones at Mobile World Congress in February, the codec is about to change the way we all experience phone calls.

First broadcast encoders with MPEG-H Audio launched

Korean broadcast equipment manufacturers DS Broadcast and Kai Media are the first to launch professional broadcast encoders supporting MPEG-H Audio. The BGE9000 4K Ultra HD Encoder by DS Broadcast and the KME-U4K Encoder by Kai Media both use the Fraunhofer MPEG-H Audio software to offer new interactive and immersive sound features. MPEG-H Audio likely will be the first new audio system put on the air by broadcasters, as it now is being built into TVs and professional equipment for Korean ATSC 3.0 broadcasts that will start in 2017.

DRM General Assembly and first DRM European Workshop at Fraunhofer IIS

Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) is the open, efficient, green digital broadcasting standard available for all frequencies and for all coverage needs: international, national, regional and local. From April 5 to 7, 2016 the first DRM European Workshop in conjunction with the DRM General Assembly was held at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuit IIS in Erlangen.
