MPEG-H 3D Audio Becomes 3GPP’s Standard Audio Codec for Video Streaming over Mobile Networks

3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project), the united standards body for the global mobile industry, has approved a technical specification for 360° video streaming in its work item “VRStream”. It will be included in 3GPP release 15, the most recent 3GPP release and the first one to specify 5G. The recommended audio format for use in VRStream services is the MPEG OMAF 3D Audio Baseline Profile, based on MPEG-H Audio.

At the IBC Show in Amsterdam, Fraunhofer IIS and Vewd, the world’s largest smart TV OTT software provider, will showcase a HbbTV demo that includes DVB DASH streaming on a set-top box running Vewd Core and Vewd HbbTV Module with MPEG-H Audio support, as defined in the latest HbbTV 2.0.2 specification.

At the IBC Show, taking place from September 14 – 18, 2018 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Fraunhofer IIS will showcase a complete production and transmission chain for the MPEG-H Audio system at booth #B80 in hall 8. The equipment includes MPEG­-H monitoring units for real-time monitoring and content authoring, postproduction tools, MPEG­-H Audio real-time broadcast encoders, as well as decoders in professional and consumer receivers.

Symphoria enables Virtual 3D Sound in the new Audi A1

Immersive sound is now also a reality in compact cars. Recently, the new Audi A1 was launched, and with it the world’s first 3D sound system that does not have loudspeakers above the dashboard. Producing the inimitable Audi surround sound in a small car is enabled by the intelligent Fraunhofer Symphoria algorithm using sophisticated acoustic reflections from the windscreen.

xHE-AAC and MPEG-D DRC Mandatory for Android Pie Devices

Earlier this month, Google announced the general availability of Android 9 “Pie”, along with the first devices incorporating the latest release of Google’s mobile operating system. Android Pie comes with a string of major upgrades in terms of audio playback, since the Extended High-Efficiency AAC (xHE-AAC) audio codec and MPEG-D DRC Loudness and Dynamic Range metadata, both substantially developed by Fraunhofer IIS, are mandatory components of the operating system. The xHE-AAC implementation used by default in Android Pie has been provided by Fraunhofer IIS and is available as part of the FDK2 AAC Codec Library for Android.
