Video: A look back at CES 2019

Does it happen every so often that poor network connectivity causes your favorite streaming service to drop when you’re on the go? Do you regularly have problems listening to dialogues in TV shows because the ambience or music in the scene is too loud? Do you sometimes feel like your smart speaker could better understand your commands? Would you like to experience immersive sound in your car or your living room without having to install a huge setup of speakers? At CES 2019 in Las Vegas, Fraunhofer IIS showcased audio technologies which present the solutions to these and other issues. DRM’s Progress in India

India is currently rolling out the largest digital radio deployment worldwide, as the public service broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) is upgrading the country’s terrestrial broadcast infrastructure for the future. The broadcast standard of choice for this project is Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM), the universal, open digital broadcasting standard for all coverage needs. DRM ensures an efficient and complete digitization of radio in India, no matter if the services are local or regional, nationwide or even international, and with the latest features such as Journaline advanced text services and service selection via station logo.

Fraunhofer IIS to Present Several CES Debuts

At CES 2019, which takes place in Las Vegas from January 8 to 11, 2019, Fraunhofer IIS will present its latest developments in audio and media technologies, including a series of CES debuts: the first commercially available MPEG-H-enabled 3D soundbars, Sonamic Loudness for car stereos, the xHE-AAC audio codec natively supported in Android, and upHear Voice Quality Enhancement for improved speech recognition on smart devices. CES visitors can experience these technologies and more at the Fraunhofer booth 20236, located in South Hall 1 at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC).

MPEG-H Audio Trial During European Athletics Championships 2018

By Adrian Murtaza | The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), together with EBU members BBC, France Télévisions, IRT, RAI and ZDF, as well as a range of technology partners, conducted what has been probably the most complex broadcast trial in Europe so far at the 2018 European Athletics Championships in Berlin. The trial demonstrated the world’s first live production and distribution of Ultra High Definition (UHD) content, with High Frame Rates (HFR), High Dynamic Range (HDR), and Next Generation Audio (NGA). The Fraunhofer IIS team, together with technology partners, supported the onsite sound engineers of EBU member stations in order to familiarize them with the features and new possibilities of MPEG-H Audio.
