AudioLabs researcher receives KlarText Award

Yesterday, Christof Weiß, who works at the International Audio Laboratories Erlangen, received the KlarText Award – the Klaus Tschira Foundation’s prize for science communication. His winning entry in the Computer Science category was entitled Das ist Haydn. Ganz sicher! and explains in an easy to understand manner the key ideas and results of his doctoral thesis about algorithms that can recognize musical styles.

Siegfried Fößel Appointed Head of Technology Study Program at HFF Munich

Dr. Siegfried Fößel, who leads the Moving Picture Technologies department at Fraunhofer IIS, has been appointed as the new head of the Technology study program at the University of Television and Film (HFF) Munich. Alongside his industry duties, he will be joining the department chair Prof. Peter C. Slansky in advancing current developments in this HFF department.

MPEG-H Audio Trial During European Athletics Championships 2018

By Adrian Murtaza | The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), together with EBU members BBC, France Télévisions, IRT, RAI and ZDF, as well as a range of technology partners, conducted what has been probably the most complex broadcast trial in Europe so far at the 2018 European Athletics Championships in Berlin. The trial demonstrated the world’s first live production and distribution of Ultra High Definition (UHD) content, with High Frame Rates (HFR), High Dynamic Range (HDR), and Next Generation Audio (NGA). The Fraunhofer IIS team, together with technology partners, supported the onsite sound engineers of EBU member stations in order to familiarize them with the features and new possibilities of MPEG-H Audio.

easyDCP software suite – Ten years of enabling easy access to Digital Cinema

The postproduction software easyDCP has secured its place on the market for creation, playback, and quality control of digital cinema packages DCPs and Interoperable Master Packages (IMPs) for ten years now. Its rich functionality is not only available through the easyDCP standalone software, but is also integrated into a number of cutting-edge postproduction tools via the easyDCP software Application Programming Interface (API). Features like Dolby Atmos support, advanced subtitling options, GPU-accelerated real-time playback, GPU-accelerated JPEG 2000 encoding (Windows), advanced scaling features, extended export features, and for some years now authoring of Interoperable Master Packages (IMP) make it a reliable tool for generating DCPs and IMPs.
